Travel

You can travel by selecting a direction on your map. The directions cover adjacent tiles, but you cannot travel to a mountain or an ocean tile. When selected, a menu will popup to give you various information about what you can expect when attempting to go there. Many things impact how long it takes to travel to another tile. If you are riding on a mount or in a vehicle, what type of mount or vehicle, how fast or slow it is, and whether or not you are in a group and the level of a character's dexterity are all factors.

If you are in a group, you will only go as fast as the slowest person in that group. You can work on projects while travelling, but only if travelling with a vehicle to work in. It is not possible to work on projects while riding a mount. The project will stay with the vehicle if left unfinished.

When on the road you can see how long you have left at the top of the screen. It will display a percentage showing how far you have travelled and the time remaining until you reach the next tile. Only Kobolds can make use of travelling between dens.

If there are vehicles in the area you will see them in a dropdown by your mount. If you have a vehicle attached it will automatically have this vehicle shown in the selection. You can try to attach any vehicle in the area to your mount. To attach a vehicle to an animal, you must be dismounted, select the vehicle in the Animals section of the Area menu, then select the Attach button. You do the same for detaching. You can only attach one vehicle to one mount. When you attempt to do so, a project will be started that uses the ranching skill to determine how quickly it will be done. To use vehicles, you view the vehicles in the area. When you find the one you're looking for, click the Enter button, and your character will get into the vehicle.' You cannot ride in a vehicle as a form of travel if it doesn't have an animal attached, but you can go inside of it. If you are the owner of the mount, you can set the description of a vehicle which is attached to it. You can also set a new owner. Owner assignment is instant. You can move a vehicle with an animal attached if you are the owner, if you are in the same group as the owner, or if the owner is sitting in the vehicle or on the mount with you. You will not be able to move them if you are in a group you are not leading though.

Note: Children under age 14 cannot turn a vehicle or mount around when an adult is present with them. They are too weak to overpower the adult for control of the vehicle or animal.

If you are riding a mount/vehicle (but not travelling): You won't see any buildings, and it will tell you that you are mounted. Your area screen will change - you will only see the location name and description. You will be able to tell who is outside, who is on a different mount, and who is on the same mount as you. You can craft and have projects on a vehicle, but NOT on a mount alone. You must have a vehicle to initiate projects while mounted or travelling and projects will not start if you're over the weight capacity of the vehicle. Animals attached to vehicles will refuse to move unless the person moving has ownership. People will get left behind if their group tries to move without the owner of the animal that is pulling their vehicle being in the group. The ground will have all of your cargo, if you have a vehicle which has room for cargo. You can only leave in a vehicle with an animal attached. You can trade on a road, but you must be within a range of 15% between positions on a given road. This includes any other character to character actions such as attacking and healing. You can turn around on a road if you need to, but only if your progress is not 0% and turning limited to once per hour since it was last used.

Note: Be aware that 1 person capacity vehicles affect combat among vehicles - you cannot heal, fatally kill, or move someone who is not in the same vehicle as you. You can however subdue and incapacitate someone who is not in the same vehicle as you, and you cannot move out of a vehicle in either of these states. For these vehicles, you are trading safety post-incap for either speed or cargo space. Keep this in mind when making your vehicle choices!

Walking without a mount/vehicle is 20 hours per road and decreases by 1 hour per dexterity level to a maximum speed of 16 hours.

Character crossing is when one of your characters ends up on the same map tile (the land you arrive to after travel on a road) as another of your characters. Character crossing is generally frowned upon because it potentially presents conflicts of interest and advantages if a player has two characters in the same area, but sometimes it is unavoidable based on IC situations of travel or not having control over where a group is going. The game will automatically detect when this occurs, and will place whichever character was already on the tile at the time of arrival into a 3 day long hibernation. Please note placing a character in a building or vehicle will not avoid automatic hibernation from a character crossing because a tile encompasses the land and everything on it including rooms and vehicles, as well as roads leading out of the tile. The game does not consider a character being on a different tile until it has successfully reached the next tile it is traveling to. Because of this, setting a character onto a road will not avoid auto-hibernation. The character will continue to the next tile and hibernate there. If two or more characters come to the same tile at the same time, whichever character is processed first on the road will remain awake while the others are set into hibernation.

A message will be automatically sent to your account to explain this, and will also explain that if your hibernating character is still detected to be on the same tile as another of your characters during the point that hibernation is supposed to lift, it will extend the hibernation another 3 days. This will continue until your hibernating character is able to come out of hibernation without any of your other characters on the tile. This hibernation is a consequence of a crossing and will not be lifted early by request from staff. Once your characters are separated, your hibernating character will naturally come out of its hibernation to be playable again when the hibernation lifts.

Knowing this, it is best to try to avoid these situations (even if it is solely based on this OOC knowledge) and to be aware of character proximity whenever possible to keep the gameplay experience seamless and without interruption. You do not currently get to choose which character hibernates even if you hibernate a character before the crossing. Hibernation will always be set on the character that was on the tile first at the time of the crossing.
